How to make Habanero Crispy Chicken Taco

The Habanero Crispy Chicken Taco is one of the most loved menus, which features chicken strip, grated cheese, and lettuce with a drizzle of either creamy ranch sauce or creamy habanero sauce wrapped in a warm flour tortilla. Habanero crispy chicken taco features crispy chicken and a special habanero sauce as its main ingredients. However, the dish takes a few other ingredients that you should keep handy at your kitchen while preparing this dish. Let us know all of them. 


Skin from five or six chicken breasts, one whole chicken, or ten chicken thighs

Oil for frying

Coarse salt, to taste

For the salsa preparation

  • 2 habanero chillies seeded and de-veined
  • 4 green onions, coarsely chopped
  • ¼ cup roughly chopped cilantro
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • Juice from ½ a lime


To assemble the taco

  • 4 corn tortillas
  • ¼ head of iceberg lettuce, thinly sliced, sprinkled with apple cider vinegar
  • 1 avocado, seeded, peeled, and sliced
  • More chopped cilantro, green onion, and tomato
  • lime for garnish


Method of Preparation

  1. Place a medium skillet on the gas stove, add oil to it and heat over medium heat. Add chicken skins fat-side-down in the pan, and cook the chicken slowly until it becomes golden brown and crispy, which will take about 8-10 minutes to cook both the sides properly. 
  2. When you are done with the chicken, drain excess oil by placing it on paper towels. Keep aside and sprinkle some coarse salt on it.

For the salsa preparation

While you cook the chicken, pulse habaneros, green onions, cilantro, tomato, and lime juice in a food processor until combined into desired consistency. When you finish preparing the salsa, transfer it to a bowl and keep aside.

To assemble

  1. While you drain the excess oil from chicken by keeping it on paper towels, clean and wipe the skillet with paper towels to remove most of the grease. 
  2. Warm tortillas in skillet until they becomes slightly brown. 
  3. To assemble the tacos, place lettuce, sliced avocado, habanero salsa, more cilantro, tomato, and green onion, and finally the crispy chicken skins on the heated tortillas. 
  4. Fold to give it a shape of taco and serve fresh to enjoy.

They've lost a very long time customer due to incompetence

I love Del Taco, so this review isn't about the chain, or the food. It's about this particular location and the complete incompetence or possibly malicious employees. I have been going to this Del Taco since the day they opened, a few times a month. Very rarely had any issues until recently.


This may sound like a minor deal, and if it happened once or twice it would be.


So, I love the habanero grilled chicken tacos. Been getting them since they came out, and before that, I would get the regular grilled chicken soft tacos. Recently, they started serving crispy fried chicken, something I cannot have due to dietary constraints.


The past FOUR times I've gone there and ordered my habanero grilled chicken tacos, they gave me regular crispy chicken tacos. After the second time, I asked the guy at the counter if they stopped selling the grilled chicken tacos and he said no. After the third time I called them, and they said I should be extra clear I want grilled, and ask them to read it back, so that's what I did on the fourth time. The guy read back grilled. And I got crispy.


I love Del Taco, but now if I crave it I will drive to Lake Forest. These guys here are either completely inept, or messing with me. Either way they've lost my patronage permanently.
